We Built this City

Itty Bitty City

They say Rome wasn’t built in a day – but with a lot of help, the Itty Bitty City grew from a few buildings to a sprawling metropolis in one Saturday afternoon in Sydney.

Itty Bitty City

Everyone gets to work and helps create the Itty Bitty City for Art Month Sydney 2011.

LMNOP headed down to the National Art School in Forbes Street Darlinghurst for the special family launch of Art Month Sydney. With us – a truckload of your basic urban building blocks (cardboard, glue, scissors, glitter) and a few of Joel Henriques’ brilliant Paper City drawings.

Our 'town planners' got to work and helped create the Itty Bitty City in just 2 hours. Photos: Ian MacPherson.

And grew …

Paperklip's Melinda Anderson created the letters for our Itty Bitty City sign.

Joel Henriques created custom-made pieces for our Itty Bitty City, including the Sydney Opera House.

As you can probably tell, we had a brilliant time and we think our volunteer town planners did too.

Of course, none of this would have been possible without the generosity of Joel Henriques, whose simple, eye-catching Paper City designs inspired the whole thing. If you want to make your own City at home, download Joel’s templates here at Made by Joel.

We’ll post more pictures next week! Thanks to everyone who came along today to help create the Itty Bitty City. Hope you had as much fun as we did!

And a BIG thank you to the following organisations and individuals who made today possible: Reverse Garbage; Art Month; National Art School; Made by Joel; Paperklip; Liane Rossler; Michelle Hadorn; Serena Geddes; Kieth Yap; Ian MacPherson; Kathryn Bailey; Elizabeth Bentley; and a special ‘thank you’ to Ingrid at Reverse Garbage.

We were very lucky to spend some time to help build this city. Some things that the kids made, were so creative and impressive in the variety.
The way everything was set up, with so many various materials available the kids imaginations lead to some amazing structures in the itty bitty city !!!
Love the photos and can’t wait to see more
