Hocusadabra is one of those online kids stores that never fails to conjure creative and carefully sourced products from around the world – just when you need inspiration. We talk to founders Kirsten Zaki and Tarlan Amigh about how they make the magic happen.

Childhood snaps of Hocusadabra founders, Kirsten (left) and Tarlan (right).

How did you two meet?
Through mutual friends on New Years Eve at a great beach shack overlooking Whale Beach. There were a few different connections – so it was always going to happen!

What was the inspiration for Hocusadabra?
Our children. We were pregnant at the same time, had our babies and struggled to buy great things for them all in one place. It sounds clichéd but it’s true. We say we’re a global bazaar and we really are, our products come from all over the world. We’re constantly picking up things on travels and here they are all on hocusadabra.com

Where does the name come from?
Tarlan’s six year old daughter. We loved how it didn’t mean anything in any language but had word association to many different people. Who doesn’t love a little magic?

What’s your favourite product/s right now?
byGraziela bed linen, love the nostalgic element and the simplicity of characters and bold colours. Both our children will be going into beds soon and will be tucked up in byGraziela for sure. We’re also loving the Scratch and Sketch books with Easter holidays coming up.

What have you learned about what kids really like?
Kids love playing with their mums and dads. Always make time to play with your kids and find things that you can do together.

Best tip for buying a birthday gift that gets noticed?
Everybody loves a story! Be sure to know about the designer of the gift or the inspiration behind the purchase. The story will be passed on and the gift will always be remembered.
