Making time for make believe

Independent publishing house, Barefoot Books want children
to literally feel imaginary worlds between their toes.

Text by Elizabeth Bentley

When Nancy Traversy and Tessa Strickland began Barefoot Books nearly 20 years ago, their philosophy was simple: to invoke the power of storytelling to nurture creativity and strengthen bonds between family, community and the earth.

Today, with a catalogue of more than 400 titles, the publishers have won a dedicated following of readers eager to unlace their shoes and explore fantastic places – or see the fantastic in the everyday.

Keen to pursue their passion for bringing imaginary worlds to life, Barefoot Books has also opened two unique stores, – an interactive studio in Concord, Massachusetts and The Barefoot Books Boutique at FAO Schwarz, Manhattan. In Concord, kids are greeted by a life-sized Storyteller’s Caravan and a magical Storyteller’s Throne. It’s a place where families can gather to browse books and experience live storytelling, music, arts and crafts and even kids yoga.

Could there be any better proof for a child that storytime is the best fun of all? For the full list of titles and products, visit the Barefoot Books online shop.
